Dr. Ernst has worked with many little ones in our practice in Arlington, WA. As a mom or dad, there is no more terrible experience than seeing your child in pain and not being able to do anything about it. Maybe you're worried about the side effects of the medicines or maybe even these traditional approaches to pain management haven't worked. Recent research proposes that more parents of kids with chronic neurological conditions are starting to use chiropractic and other complementary treatments to help their children live normal, pain-free lives.
In one investigation of pediatric patients at Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton, Canada, and Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the authors looked at over 200 surveys completed regarding both male and female patients with an average age of almost 10 years old. The conditions of the participants ranged from epilepsy to headaches to cerebral palsy.
They found that about 60% of the parents interviewed had sought some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The most widely used CAM treatments were therapeutic massage and chiropractic care. Multi-vitamins were the most utilized CAM products.
In the surveys assessed, most participants reported that they found positive health results with CAM and appreciated the minimal or completely non-existent side effects. They also noted that when choosing to use CAM products, it is always best to disclose this to your primary-care provider .
In a prior study that involves the same two medical centers, specialists reviewed 939 questionnaires completed by parents who had kids with chronic symptoms. Just as before, the parents were in agreement that CAM supplements and treatments such as chiropractic care were employed quite often and very effective when working with kids who struggled with chronic disorders. The ones reported in the report were disorders relating to cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology, or respiratory issues.
Both of these reports point out the many advantages of using complementary and alternative therapy like chiropractic care when helping a child deal their long-term health issues. It offers an alternative that doesn't create undesirable side effects and focuses on complete body wellness, making it perfect for children with chronic illnesses.
